Goals
Palo Alto Friends Nursery School strives to provide an environment for your child that is:
- ordered and safe
- interracial, interreligious, and multi-cultural
- many-faceted, offering a wide variety of choices staffed with caring, qualified teachers
- non-discriminatory
We hope the children will:
- Learn to get along with others
- learn to share items and people
- explore a variety of materials and activities
- grow in expressing themselves verbally
- develop responsibility for themselves and their actions
- learn acceptable ways of expressing their aggression and other strong feelings
- learn to trust and feel safe with many adults
- develop the ability to finish what has been begun
- learn to respect all people
- learn to respect materials
- build a strong self-image through successful experiences
Parents at Friends will have opportunities to:
- consider age-appropriate behavior in young children observe children in a group setting
- discuss their child's growth with trained professionals, share experiences and feelings with other parents
- work creatively and sensitively for the good of all
- have time away from their own child
- develop techniques for working and living with pre-schoolers!
Additional goals of Palo Alto Friends Nursery School are to:
- design time, space, materials, and resources to foster maximum growth and development so as to facilitate the transition from home to a larger world
- foster intellectual growth appropriate to each child's level and pace
- help build positive attitudes toward school and learning
- provide support to parents and to be responsive to their needs
- work through the process of consensus so that decisions and policy-making are accessible to all
The process we use to achieve these goals is as important as the goals themselves. We invite your participation in this process, in the education of our children, and of ourselves about our children.
